Lots of changes afoot for me in 2018… I’ve applied and been invited to 3 major orchestral auditions, including Cincinnati and after that, the Metropolitan Opera. Preparing for these auditions, plus Chicago Lyric earlier in the season, has been transportingly wonderful… initially it reconnected me with all my early training, and playing for respected colleagues furthered that welcome sense of connection. And recently, I have felt the truly novel sensation of, well, studying with myself. I record myself, take notes, maintain graphs of both reeds, practise time and observations on the music. If nothing else, it feels like the sabbatical I’ve always wanted.
In other news, friends are gathering to help me pack up and polish my dear late Dad’s beautiful hand-made log house for sale in the spring. This has been an insanely difficult decision but it is time. I hope the house will go to someone who loves it and can care for it with all the awareness of the rarity of living in a totally hand-built home, crafted by B. Allan Mackie who finished this house at the age of 84 and has taught people all over the world that they can trust themselves to make their way in the world by the work of their own hands.
